The Channel Islands YMCA is an umbrella organization for seven separate YMCAs and affiliates in the South Coast region of California. CIYMCA needed a site that would communicate the identity of the parent organization while offering the ability for each YMCA in the group to provide their own unique information. The challenge was to design a flexible interface that would communicate a strong visual statement, reinforcing the mission and core values of the YMCA while allowing each portion of the site to be customized to meet the different needs of each of the member organizations.
Silicon Beach Westnet worked closely with the team of YMCA directors to implement a universal information architecture for the user interface design in the Channel Islands site. Extensive planning allowed the seven organizations to share a master navigation scheme that was user-friendly and easily understood. Creative use of digital file compression technologies and bandwidth saving placement of visuals produced a strong interactive interface without increasing download times.
Macromedia's Flash was used to build a light-weight, dramatic opener to the site and also used in the structural navigation system throughout the site. Text was designed using simple html to allow for easy editing by each of the participating organizations.
